Two workshops & 4 webinars.
First of a series exploring tarot and its symbolism.
The problem with the tarot is that is so commonly associated with divination (fortune telling) and the mere mention of the word can send people either running sceptically away from such nonsense or it launches them into a folly of woo and crystals.
So it is appropriate to tell you right up front there is no divination or fortune telling involved in this program. Instead, we will be looking at the archetypal nature of the tarot symbolism, where it comes from and what this means, and more importantly, how we can use this archetypal knowledge in our metaphor explorations and personal development work.
As you will have learned to expect from Andrew T. Austin, this will be a woo-free course, no crystals, no dolphins or rainbow angels, enlightened masters or meditations.
The tarot deck we will be using is the Thoth Tarot by Aleister Crowley. The cards come in different sizes, and I suggest you get the larger size deck as it is easier to see the detailed symbolism.
Session 1. Workshop (4 hours)
In this workshop, we will take a look at the origins of tarot symbolism and its relationship to archetypes and application to experiential metaphor.
- history of the tarot
- the organisation of the tarot deck (4 suits, 22 trumps, 16 court cards, 40 minor arcana)
- application to the Qabalistic Tree of Life
- magick and ritual as an aid to learning and experiencing the symbolism
Session 2. Webinar (2 hours)
In this online webinar, we will examine two of the major arcana (trump cards) that relate to the metaphors work that is developed in the MoM and Historia work and their placement within the Qabalistic Tree of Life.
- The Hermit card, its imagery archetypes and the relationship to “The Hurts” (emotional injury) category of metaphor.
- The Death card, its imagery archetypes and the relationship to “The Immersions” (personal crisis) category of metaphor.
Session 3. Webinar (2 hours)
In this online webinar, we will examine two more of the major arcana that relate to the metaphors work that is developed in the MoM and Historia work and their placement within the Qabalistic Tree of Life.
- The Tower card and its relationship to confession, the false ego and Immersion metaphor.
- The Fool card and it’s connection to social ritual, The Green Man archetype and Christmas.
Session 4. Webinar (2 hours)
In this online webinar, we will explore the elemental combination aspects of the 16 Court Cards and how these combinations can be used to understand the experiential metaphor.
Session 5. Workshop (4 hours)
In this workshop, we will work with each other’s metaphor and examine them according to the tarot archetypes in order to see what other aspects of metaphor can be found within the information-dense imagery of experiential metaphor. We will also look at other cards relevant to the Metaphors of Movement and Historia bodies of work.
Session 6. Webinar (2 hours)
Follow up Q and A and finishing off any aspects which need further work.
