Panspermia and Ancient Astronaut Archetype

Panspermia is the hypothesis that life on Earth may have originated from microorganisms or other forms of life that arrived on our planet from elsewhere in the universe, either via comets, meteorites, or possibly even on a spacecraft. The idea is that life may be common in the universe and that it could be transported from one planet to another through space.

Meanwhile, the related Starseed theory is a belief that some people on Earth may have originated from other planets or star systems, and that they possess certain psychic or spiritual abilities as a result. This theory is not supported by scientific evidence and is considered to be a form of pseudoscience.

Panspermia is a scientific hypothesis that has been proposed and studied by various scientists and researchers over the years. The main proponents of Panspermia are considered to be:

1. Fred Hoyle, a British astronomer and mathematician, who first proposed the idea of cometary panspermia in the 1950s.
2. Francis Crick, a British molecular biologist (he invented DNA!), along with his colleague Leslie Orgel proposed the idea of directed panspermia in the 1970s, which suggests that life may have been deliberately sent to Earth by an advanced civilization.
3. Chandra Wickramasinghe, a Sri Lankan-British astrobiologist, who has been a leading proponent of panspermia and has proposed the idea of interplanetary transfer of microorganisms as a means of explaining the origin of life on Earth.
4. Dirk Schulze-Makuch, a German astrobiologist, who has proposed that life may have originated on Earth from microorganisms brought by comets or meteorites.

Francis Crick

Francis Crick, along with his colleague Leslie Orgel, proposed the idea of “Directed Panspermia” in the 1970s. This theory suggests that life on Earth may have been deliberately sent here by an advanced alien civilization. According to this theory, aliens may have sent living organisms or microorganisms to Earth in a spacecraft, with the purpose of starting or seeding life on our planet.

Crick and Orgel proposed this theory as a solution to the problem of the “Rare Earth Hypothesis” which states that the conditions that led to the emergence of life on Earth may be extremely rare in the universe. They argued that the likelihood of life evolving independently on other planets may be low and that it may be more probable that life was brought to Earth by an advanced civilization.

It’s worth noting that the theory of directed panspermia is not to be confused with the theory of ancient astronauts or ancient aliens theory, which is also speculative and lacking in scientific evidence.

The theory of ancient astronauts or ancient alien theory is the belief that ancient human civilizations were visited or influenced by extraterrestrial beings. This theory has been popularized in books, films, and TV shows, but it is not considered to be a scientifically credible theory.

Proponents of this theory suggest that aliens visited Earth in the distant past and had a profound influence on human history and development. They argue that ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Mayans, and Sumerians, could not have built their monumental structures and achieved their advanced scientific and technological knowledge without the help of extraterrestrial visitors.

Needless to say, there’s zero scientific evidence to support the theory of ancient astronauts, and the majority of mainstream archaeologists and historians reject it. Idiots on Facebook will still use it to explain everything from the ancient world that they don’t understand, like the construction of the pyramids.

Popular Culture

The theories of panspermia and ancient astronauts have been popularized in many movies, TV shows, and stories. Some popular examples include:

1. The movie “Prometheus” (2012) directed by Ridley Scott,  explores the concept of an advanced alien civilization that may have created life on Earth.
2. The movie “Arrival” (2016) directed by Denis Villeneuve, tells the story of alien spacecraft that arrive on Earth and explores the idea of communication with extraterrestrial life.
3. The TV series “Stargate SG-1” (1997-2007) features an ancient alien race that has visited Earth in the distant past and has left behind advanced technology.
4. The TV series “Ancient Aliens” (2010-2021) explores the idea that ancient human civilizations were visited by extraterrestrial beings and that they had a profound influence on human history and development.
5. The book “Chariots of the Gods” (1968) written by Erich von Däniken, popularized the idea of ancient astronauts and argued that many ancient structures, such as the pyramids, were built by extraterrestrial beings.

“Chariots of the Gods” is a fun book written by Erich von Däniken and published in 1968.  It probably isn’t supposed to be fun.

Obviously, Von Däniken’s ideas have been widely discredited by mainstream scientists and scholars, who argue that his interpretations of the evidence are flawed and that his theories are not supported by any scientific evidence. Many of the claims made in the book have been debunked, and it is widely considered to be a work of pseudoscience. It’s still a great book to read on holiday though.

The Archetype in the Ancient World 

There are many stories from ancient cultures, religions, and mythology that have been interpreted by some as possibly reflecting the theme of ancient astronauts or extraterrestrial influence on human history.

1. The ancient Sumerian texts talk of god-like beings known as the Anunnaki, who are said to have come from the heavens and taught humanity various arts and sciences.
2. The ancient Egyptian texts describe the god Horus as having been born of a virgin mother and having a divine father who came from the heavens.
3. The ancient Indian texts, the Vedas, contain stories of flying machines called Vimanas, which are said to have been operated by advanced beings.
4. The ancient Mayan texts describe the gods as having arrived on Earth in flying crafts and having played a major role in the development of their civilization.
5. The Bible in various passages tells of the Elohim, a divine council of beings who are said to have created mankind and intervened in human affairs.
6. The ancient Greek myths describe gods and goddesses who lived on Mount Olympus and often intervened in human affairs.
7. The ancient Chinese texts, such as the I Ching, which describe the “Sons of Heaven” as powerful beings who came to Earth and played a role in shaping Chinese culture.
8. The ancient Norse myths describe the gods as powerful beings who lived in Asgard and often interacted with humans.
9. The Hopi Native American tribe’s oral tradition tells about the Kachinas, spiritual beings who are considered to be messengers from the spiritual world and who taught their tribe many things.
10. The Dogon tribe of Mali in West Africa has a traditional story of Nommo, amphibious beings sent from the star Sirius to Earth to teach the tribe about science and cosmology.

The Nephilim

Inspiring many goth bands of the 80’s and 90’s, the Nephilim are a group of beings that are mentioned in the Bible, specifically in the Book of Genesis and in the Book of Numbers. They are described as the offspring of the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men.” The exact meaning and interpretation of the passage are debated and there are various interpretations of who or what the Nephilim are.

One popular interpretation is that the “sons of God” refers to angels and that the Nephilim were a race of giant, powerful beings who were the result of interbreeding between angels and humans. This interpretation is often associated with the ancient astronaut theory, which suggests that extraterrestrial beings have visited Earth in the distant past and had a profound influence on human history and development.

Another interpretation is that the “sons of God” refers to powerful, wealthy, or noble men who intermarried with common women, and the Nephilim were the result of this union.

Here are some Bible verses that mention the Nephilim, as translated in the King James Version (names vary across different Biblical editions):

1. Genesis 6:4: “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”
